Indian Lake State Park

Indian Lake is the fourth largest inland lake in the Upper Peninsula with an area of 8,400 acres. It is 6 miles long and 3 miles wide. The lake was once called M'O'Nistique Lake. According to surveyor records, dated 1850, Indians lived in log cabins near the outlet of the Lake. These Indians, presumably, are what gave Indian Lake its name. Indian Lake has a maximum depth of 18 feet with about 90 percent of the lake less than 15 feet deep. Game fish include perch, walleye, northern pike, muskellunge, rock bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, sturgeon and brown trout. Clean sandy beaches around the entire lake make it a favorite for swimmers and sunbathers.

The park is composed of two units which are 3 miles apart and separated by the waters of Indian Lake. Two modern campgrounds with electric hookups, flush toilets and showers offer the camper a wide choice of over 300 campsites. The south shore offers lakeshore camping while the west shore offers more secluded and sheltered campsites but they are 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the lake. The west shore camp area has electricity, vault toilets and drinking water (no showers or flush toilets). Each campground has a sanitation station for self-contained camping vehicles.
Reservations are available for both campgrounds and are advisable for the south shore especially during July and August. The west shore normally has vacancies so reservations there are usually not necessary. Reservations can be made in person, by telephone, by fax or by mail with the appropriate application form.

For the camper with little or no equipment, Rent-A-Tent's and Rent-A-Tipi's are available (army cots included). A large cooler, light and propane stove are available for an additional fee.
